What a taxi from a Bangkok airport actually costs

Getting in costs 35 baht in a standard taxi and 40 in a large one, and that covers the first kilometre. Which of the two pulls up at the rank is not your decision, so plan on the higher figure and be pleased when it turns out to be the lower one.

Getting in, first kilometre included

This is where most write-ups go wrong. They quote the opening rate as though it applied to the whole trip, when in fact it climbs in bands — and a run from either airport crosses more than one of them.

So “6.5 baht a kilometre” describes the first few kilometres of your trip and nothing after that. The further you go, the further the rate has moved from the number you read.

When the car stops moving the meter switches from distance to time: 3 baht a minute. None of that is visible when you set off, and on an evening run out of the airport it can be a large share of what you end up paying. It is also why the same trip on two different days is two different prices.

Standing in traffic, per minute

The meter rate is not one number: it starts at 6.5 baht per kilometre and climbs with distance. When traffic stops the car, the meter switches to 3 baht per minute — in an evening jam that is most of the fare.

A taxi taken from the terminal rank costs 50 baht more than the meter shows. The airport publishes it, the driver keeps it, and there is nothing to discuss. It is worth knowing precisely because it gets used as cover for something else entirely — a price agreed in advance with the meter switched off.

Airport charge, on top of the meter

This one is legitimate: the airport itself publishes it. 50 baht on top of the meter for any taxi taken from the terminal rank, paid directly to the driver. It is not a scam and not negotiable.

The surcharge that is real, and the flat price that is not

Expressway tolls are not on the meter and not folded into anything else. The driver will ask for them as each booth comes up, and cash is the safe assumption. Two published rates matter on airport runs:

That is the rate for a single booth, and a run from the airport passes more than one.

Which booths you actually pass depends on the route your driver takes, so there is no total to look up — not because someone is hiding it, but because it is not a fixed thing.

Every part above is published. The sum is not, and it cannot be: it depends on the distance to your address, the hour you land and the route. What the parts buy you is the ability to check the fare at the end. A confident headline figure never gives you that. If the meter ran, the airport charge was 50 baht, and the toll amounts matched the signs at the booths, then the fare is the fare.
